FROM THE COUNSELOR

Hi Families!

Get ready for some fun as we focus on Creativity this month! This is our 9th and final character trait focus for the year. One way to think about creativity is “using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem.” Opportunities to be creative are all around us!

Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing creativity. Here are two ideas:

  • Create in the kitchen. When my teens were younger we had ‘Master Chef’ challenges inspired by the TV show. I’d give the kids (sometimes as a team) a box with mystery ingredients. They’d have 20 minutes to create a culinary delight. This creative idea could be done on the fly, using ingredients on hand. If friends were over, the grown-ups got to watch (aka relax) and serve as judges scoring on creativity, taste, use of ingredients, plating, etc. My kids loved this and so did their friends. We also did it as an extended family competition during the holidays & as I used it successfully as a birthday party idea.

  • Create something from nothing. A family challenge suggested by PurposeFULL People is to find a large cardboard box and unleash your creativity as you work together to create something totally new. What can the box become? Perhaps it will be a spaceship, an ice cream shop, a fairy castle, or a race car. Use any craft supplies or scraps on hand and your imagination to turn an ordinary box into a new creation.

Enjoy creating and connecting with your loved ones.

Cheers,

Katie Brase, x̌alilc Counselor
