Dear Orca families,
Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day! Classes are learning about the Suquamish tribe, the indigenous people of our area, and the important contributions of the Suquamish people. They are learning about storytelling, art, fishing, and life in the Puget Sound, also known as the Salish Sea. Help with our home to school connections by visiting the Suquamish Museum to discover the rich culture and traditions of the people of the clear salt water.
Your Orca students have been absolutely rocking at our 3 Be's. Students have earned enough Caught in the Act tickets that our jar is just about filled! In anticipation that it will be completely filled, our first whole school celebration is this Friday, October 18th: PAJAMA DAY. Please plan on sending your students in their pajamas on Friday to celebrate!
We need your help! We understand parking is scarce and arrival and dismissal can take a while. Our number one priority is the safety of our students and families. Things may not make sense to you, but we have thought our processes through carefully and there are reasons we do what we do.
Please remember:
- Don’t park in the lot before school (our staff cannot find parking to come to work)
- The bus loop can only be used from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm for late arrival or early pick up
- Use the drive up loop rather than parking after school. Parking creates a safety hazard for our buses and other traffic.
-
Consider riding the bus! With the bus students arrive to school on time and you are helping our neighbors by not bringing your car after school.
Thanks for all the ways you help make x̌alilc an amazing school. We appreciate your help as we keep students safe. Have a great week!
Rhonda Walton

Wear Orange on Wednesday!
- On Oct. 16th, x̌alilc students are invited to join national efforts and wear something ORANGE to send one, large, universal representation that we are united against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. The color orange provides a powerful expression of solidarity for bullying prevention.
- Back by popular demand, Taproot Theater will perform for a whole school assembly. This year’s bullying prevention play, Rocks! By Melanie Godsey, is brand new and takes place at Camp Obsidian!
- Teachers will augment the day with books and lessons on the topic.
Throughout the month of October, Ms. Brase will be visiting classrooms for regular Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classroom lessons focused on the 3 Rs: How to recognize, refuse, and report bullying.

Let’s get moving, Orcas! This year we are switching up our annual fundraiser and organizing the first annual Move-a-thon at x̌alilc (Halilts) Elementary! This is the ONLY fundraiser for the 2024-2025 school year, and we need all hands on deck to reach this year’s goal of $70,000! Funds raised help support important educational resources such as, teacher grants, educational technology devices, garden supplies, STEM supplies, office/classroom supplies, community events/parent resources, recess supplies/activities, sensory tools, yearbooks for everyone, art supplies—and much more! We put the funds to good use!
The Move-a-thon is an incredible display of school spirit and community. On October 25, all x̌alilc students will complete a circuit-style style fun run on the field. It’s not a race, we don’t count laps - it’s just fun! All x̌alilc community members are invited to come cheer your student on (stay tuned for the schedule!) To celebrate our amazing school community, over the next two weeks students will be entered into weekly prize drawings. Plus, prizes will be awarded to the class that raises the most money, the grade that raises the most, and a school-wide celebration after the fundraiser to stamp a job well done!
Be sure to check for the Move-a-thon packet for more information about how to set up a fundraising page on our fundraising website. We’d love to get 100% participation in sign-ups--we encourage all families to give what they can!

DONATE by CASH or CHECK
Donations can be collected in person via cash or check (made out to Halilts PTO). Collect donations in the envelope and turn in on or before Friday, October 25th. Don’t worry, we will send a reminder!

The Great Washington ShakeOut
|
On Thursday, October 17th, we will participate in The Great Washington ShakeOut; the state's largest earthquake and tsunami drill. During this drill, we practiced how to Drop Cover, and Hold On, to stay safe during earthquake shaking. While we practiced how to stay safe in our school environment, now is a good time to extend that safety to home so you and your family can protect yourselves appropriately wherever you are when an earthquake strikes.
