From the Counselor

Hello Families!

Do you ever lose your temper or find yourself yelling and wishing you could do better? Did you grow up in a household with a lot of shouting? Parenting is hard, and yelling can feel like a automatic response in high-stress moments. However, frequent yelling can undermine a child's emotional well-being and break down trust, and deep down, it’s usually not what we as parents wish to model nor how we want to respond to our children.

As your school counselor, I like to pass along resources to support your positive parenting journey. Adapted from GoZen!, I invite you to a 7 Day No Yelling Challenge.

Use this one-week guide to help adjust your reactions and bring more peace to your home. (I especially love day 6).
  • Day 1: Shift Your Mindset - When frustration builds, repeat: “They’re not giving me a hard time, they’re having a hard time.” Notice how empathy softens your response.
  • Day 2: Practice the Pause - Build a reset ritual (deep breaths, counting to 10, or washing your hands ) to cool down before reacting.
  • Day 3: Whisper, Don't Yell - Lower your voice and make eye contact when tempted to shout. Observe how a calm tone changes their reaction.
  • Day 4: Connection Over Correction - Spend 10–15 pressure-free minutes together (reading, playing, talking). Validate their feelings ("I see you're upset") before addressing behavior.
  • Day 5: Tell Them What to Do, Not What Not to Do - Swap "no" or "stop" for positive directions (e.g., “Please walk” instead of “Stop running”). Praise good choices when you see them.
  • Day 6: Repair the Slip-Ups - If you lose your cool, own it. Apologize calmly and share how you'll handle it better next time to model healthy repair.
  • Day 7: Address the Root Need - Pause to consider what your child actually needs in the moment. Offer collaborative solutions rather than strict demands.

Thank you for your commitment to growing alongside your kids. Here's to a week of deeper connection and calmer days!

All the Best,

Katie

Culture Club

Culture Club

Join Culture Club!

Culture Club is a space where students can explore the language of belonging and learn how to advocate for themselves and others in a safe and supportive environment. Through engaging activities, students will:
  • Develop tools to express their experiences and perspectives with confidence
  • Learn ways to create and respect personal space and boundaries
  • Build connections with peers who share similar experiences while learning from those with different perspectives
  • Explore resources and practices that encourage self-advocacy and strengthen a sense of inclusion and community
  • Our goal is to create an environment where every child’s identity—cultural, personal, and familial—is recognized and respected. By participating, students will deepen their appreciation for the diversity that enriches our community and grow as compassionate, globally-minded individuals.

Staying Connected

Staying Connected

As you may have noticed, we recently updated our school websites to replace direct staff email addresses with secure contact forms. This change was an important step to boost our cybersecurity and protect our school networks from phishing attacks.

Because this is a new process this year, we want to make sure you always know the best way to get in touch with us!

  • To reach a teacher directly: Please use the secure contact forms located on our school’s staff directory page.
  • If you aren't sure who to contact: You can always use the main email address listed at the very bottom of our school’s homepage. This email goes directly to our main office managers, who will make sure your message is quickly forwarded to the exact right person.
Thank you for your patience as we transition to this more secure system, and for your continued partnership!
