From the Counselor

Along with fall color, pumpkin spice and our move-a-thon, October’s focus at Halilts is around National Bullying Prevention Month. Throughout October, counselor lessons in classrooms focus on teaching the 3Rs: How to recognize, report, and refuse bullying.

Additionally, Orcas unite for the cause on our annual Unity Day celebration, Wednesday, October 21st. Students are invited to join national efforts and wear ORANGE, sending one universal representation that we are united against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The color orange provides a powerful expression of solidarity for bullying prevention. On Unity Day, students will also enjoy Taproot Theater’s production, Detectives!, sponsored by our generous PTO. This assembly is always a hit! Thank you, PTO!

On the homefront, you can check out these resources: What Parents Should Know About Bullying and Stopbullying.gov for useful information to augment your at-home discussions around this important topic.

Warmly,
Katie

Move-a-thon

5 days to go: Move-a-thon is this Friday!

The countdown is on! On Friday, October 16, our students hit the playground to run, walk, skip, and dance for x̌alilc. Every gift is helpful in the effort to enable funding field trips, school supplies, enrichment activities, performances, teacher grants, emergency supplies, and so much more.

Prizes are still up for grabs:
  • Top class wins a fro-yo party from IslandCool
  • Top grade wins an extra recess, now with popcorn!
  • Class with highest participation percentage  receives their class name on the Orca Spirit Stuffy. One donation per student counts them in.
  • Every donation is an entry in the free spiritwear drawing
  • Reaching our goal brings the Kona Ice truck to recess for the whole school

Share the link with grandparents, neighbors, coworkers and friends near and far. Every donation counts!  When we swim as a pod, we can make waves!

Recess Activities Are Back!

Get ready to bring the fun to the playground! Once a month, our amazing Recess Activities Co-Chairs, Eva Caldara and Jill Madison, are hosting themed crafts, games, and special activities for students—and we need your help to make them happen!

If you love working with kids, getting creative, and having fun, we’d love for you to join our volunteer team. We have exciting events planned for the entire school year, and scheduling is super flexible—you can sign up for a single shift or stay for both if your schedule allows!

Ready to jump in? Before signing up, please make sure you are an approved Bainbridge Island School District (BISD) volunteer.

Unity Day

Unity Day

WEAR ORANGE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21!

October is here, and it is National Bullying Prevention Month! We support bullying prevention work year-round, but we will unite for the cause this month with our annual Unity Day on Wednesday, October 21st. On this special day, we ask all students, staff, and families to participate by wearing ORANGE as we send a visible message that we are building commUNITY through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

In addition, students will contribute to our school-wide Pod Power mural by writing a word that means belonging to them. In the morning on Unity Day (October 21st), we will also enjoy an annual Taproot Theatre production that is sponsored by our hardworking and incredible PTO. Thank you, PTO!

Apple Crunch Day

Celebrate National Farm to School Month & Taste Washington Day!

October is National Farm to School Month, and our district's Farm to School Program is excited to celebrate by participating in Taste Washington Day!

To mark the occasion, Halilts' students had the option to enjoy a crisp, fresh Washington-grown apple on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.  During lunch, all elementary schools held a synchronized "Apple Crunch" right in their cafeterias! At lunchtime, students bit into their local apples together to make a statewide noise for Washington agriculture and healthy school meals.

Keep an eye out for more farm-to-school highlights throughout the month as we continue celebrating local foods!

Check out these cute pictures from Apple Crunch Day!

Build Habits & Routines to SHOW UP and SHOW OUT!

By October, the excitement of the new school year may be wearing off and busy schedules are in full swing. This is a great time to check in on the routines that help students arrive to school every day, on time, and ready to learn.

A successful morning starts the night before! Elementary students need 9–12 hours of sleep each night to support attention, learning, behavior, and overall well-being. If your student is starting to struggle with attendance, talk with your student’s teacher or school counselor at conferences later this month, we are here to help!

Keep October mornings running smoothly by:
  • Maintaining consistent bedtime and wake-up times.
  • Talking positively about school and making attendance a family priority.
  • Packing backpacks and choosing clothes the night before.
  • Starting the day with a nutritious breakfast.
  • Building in a few extra minutes to avoid a rushed morning.

Remember, every day at school is an opportunity to learn, connect with friends and teachers, and build confidence.
